The Thrill and Mysticism of Escapology
Topic: Magic
Escapology is an art that has been practiced since ancient times. Artists use this form of magic to escape from restraints, traps and confined spaces. It is a way of jolting our innate fear of not being able to escape in a life threatening situation that thrills us when we see these artists perform impossible and unthinkable feats whilst being restrained or disabled in some way. There have been many famous escapologists including the well known Houdini to the more recent artists such as David Copperfield, David Blaine and Criss Angel to name a few. The greatest skill that these people have is the ability to perfect methods of escape and combine them with keeping the people entertained and guessing for hours or even days at a time. They push themselves to the very edge of the boundaries of human life as we know it.The acts of escapology can be attained by two methods. One is by illusionist's techniques practiced and performed with a high degree of skill. The Other method is actually doing the escaping by using pure strength, agility and daring. Whatever the method is; these daredevil and death defying performances always manage to capture the imagination of the audiences. The traditional paraphernalia of escapologists include locked boxes, straightjackets, ropes, padlocks, underground pits, handcuffs and containers filled with sand. Today, there are more and more advanced acts available for our enjoyment as escapologists work hard to add value to the original acts. Some even try to add an obstacle course for the artist to struggle with after escaping. More than one escape trick can be combined in one act. The biggest name well known the world over for his ability and dexterity in escapology is the great Harry Houdini who built his career on this type of magic illusion or stunts. Houdini was an expert in the art of escapology and tried hard to retain the aura of mystery and suspense at all times. This is needed for any true escape artist to a certain degree as the audiences expects it, the more mysterious the better. Many of Houdini's acts were based on technical skills as much as magic itself and involved lock-picking and contortion or both. He demonstrated his abilities by escaping from handcuffs, prison cells, straightjackets and padlocks. His well known acts include the Chinese Water Torture and Metamorphosis. Norman Murray Walters was an escapologist and an illusionist who was a Houdini contemporary. It is this Australian magician that first coined the word escapologist to describe and differentiate this branch of magic. Throughout the years performers have added to these acts or renewed them and are called modern day 'Houdinis' by the public. Escapology has entered into our lives in more ways than seeing performances by artists and this speaks for its enduring allure. Scores of books, films, comics and novels have dealt with this age old theme which seems to appeal to young and old alike. Harry Houdini has starred in many films and has more comics, books and films based upon him. Today, there are even video games to thrill audiences with escapology. David Copperfield, David Blaine, Lance Burton, Jeff McBride and Criss Angel are all present day magicians performing to packed audiences throughout the world and have extensive escapology acts in their repertoire. In India, the land of mysticism itself, escapologists are to be seen performing in busy street corners and theaters alike. They are helped by the ancient art of Yoga to achieve unthinkable heights in many of these acts. The thrill and sense of achievement that we feel when an artist manages to escape seemingly impossible restraints are invaluable.

A Touch of Magic
Topic: Magic
A magic trick well done is to bring a smile to a face, awe struck wonder to some and happiness all around. There is nothing better than magic to transport us to a fantasy land full of impossible happenings and unattainable outcomes. We can all try our hand at magic, but those who succeed are the ones who practiced the art of magic relentlessly and continued on to become accomplished performers. As one magician put it once 'It is better to master one magic trick well than to know a hundred.' Learning magic can be fun and will be a hobby that will accompany you throughout life. There are many tricks that are easy to master and these are the ones to start with. Even renowned magicians such as David Copperfield, Lance Burton, David Blaine, Chris Angel, Steve Barry and Darren Brown had to start somewhere. The adage 'practice makes perfect' is true of magic more than in any other field. Constant practice cannot be stressed enough. A good place to start is by trying out a simple card trick or a coin trick. These tricks usually involve sleight of hand which needs to be practiced with diligence. It is a good idea to do a little bit of everything on a regular basis as this will make you able to perform more tricks and give you a wider range. The art of performing is as important magic itself. A carefully placed dramatic pause, a joke or well feigned surprise all adds to your magic skills. A little bit of suspense and setting up the trick for maximum effect has to be done artfully. A trick well done is guaranteed to freak out the audience and they will want more of your mad magic. It is the reaction from the crowd that a magician lives for and once you get the taste of a captivated audience there is no turning back. The test for a successful magic trick is how well it is remembered afterwards. The magic tricks, however simple they were that we saw as children stay with us forever added to the few memories that are clear and indelibly etched in our minds forever. Therefore, a magic trick should always be performed before an audience only after it has been perfected and set with utmost care. As a magician one of the most important lessons to learn is never to explain a trick and only say 'it's just magic.' This is always accepted without question as deep inside us we all want to be awestruck by magic, a seemingly larger than life force. Once you have mastered a few tricks it is best performed by putting together a variety of tricks such as card tricks, coin tricks, handkerchief tricks and rope tricks. The variety keeps the audience interested and excited. They should not even know what they really saw and should go home still feeling bemused. The basic rules of magic should be adhered to by all magicians as it is the only way to keep the magical mystery alive. First of all, never reveal the secret. This should be done only in the case of another person who wants to learn magic and never to an audience. For a magic trick to succeed the setting that it is performed in has to be ideally suited for the trick. So the second rule of magic is to perform only under a perfect setting. Thirdly, a trick has to be practiced and perfected before showing off. Practicing has to be as natural as breathing to a magician and this may mean how successful you are or not in the long run. Finally, you have to leave them wanting more. Never overstay your welcome and run the risk of becoming boring. It is true for magic as it is for anyone else in show business.

Topic: Magic
Heads or Tails' It's Magician's Choice...If you're new to the world of magic then you may or may not have heard of a technique called 'magician's choice'. This is one of those tricks that every magician needs up their sleeve. If you're a newcomer to the field or are just interested in learning more about magic and illusion then you're going to love this technique. And for you seasoned pros out there' This will be like revisiting an old friend. After all, spend any time in this industry and you'll run into this great technique over and over again. Yep, it's that good. Here's how it works: magician's choice is a technique that makes the spectator think that he or she is making an independent choice. But really, the magician is carefully guiding that person to make sure they choose exactly what the magician wants them to choose. It's easier to understand magician's choice when it's used with a spectator. So, let's look at an easy beginner trick called 'Heads or Tails' to see this technique in action. The Trick: Heads Or TailsHere's how the Heads or Tails trick looks to spectators: you place a nickel, a dime, and a quarter, along with a sealed envelope, on a table. With a bit of prompting from you the spectator chooses one of the coins, and the others are pushed aside. Next, your spectator flips the coin.Once you've determined whether it's heads or tails you open the envelope and shake out a small piece of paper. That paper reveals exactly what coin was chosen, and whether or not it landed heads or tails. It's an exact prediction that will wow your audience. To learn how to perform this effect, please click here:

David Copperfield
Topic: Magic
A seemingly normal and ordinary man appears before the audience. Even as he enters the audience realizes that he is a dream-weaver who holds them under his spell. This is none other than David Copperfield, who is famous for his excellence in the field of illusion and magic of all sorts. Starting to perform at the tender age of 12, he progressed onto becoming the youngest person to be admitted to the Society of American Magicians. By the time he turned 16, he was teaching a course in magic at the New York University and at 18 entered Fordham University. Three weeks later he was chosen for the lead role of the Chicago based musical, The Magic Man, performing all the magic tricks by himself. Thus he started his career under the name of David Copperfield. He was born as David Seth Kotkin in 1956 to Jewish parents in Metuchen, New Jersey. Since his childhood he has been a keen student and a practitioner of the art of magic and illusion. His artistry and imagination as well as his extraordinary theatrical abilities are evident in all his work. Most notable out of his work are the instances where he walked through the Great China Wall, made the famous Statue of Liberty disappear and demonstrated flying and levitated over the Grand Canyon. He is a magician par excellence and has many television shows, world tours, books and awards to his credit. David Copperfield played the character of the magician called Ken in the film Terror Train in 1980. He also brought out two books named David Copperfield's Tales of the Impossible and David Copperfield's Beyond Imagination which were written together with Dean Koontz, Joyce Carol Oats and Ray Bradbury. David Copperfield may be the most successful magician in terms of earnings. He is currently the thirteenth highest paid entertainer and has been featured on the cover of Forbes Magazine. He has taken the art of magic and illusion to great heights and has a charming presence on stage. His abilities have been recognized by many countries. The French government awarded the 'Chevalier of Arts and Letters and at least four other countries have stamps and his likeness on their legal tender. He has been awarded an honorary doctorate of Humane Letters by Fordham University and in 2000 he was named a Living Legend by the United States Library of Congress. Madame Toussaud's in London displays his wax likeness and he also has been awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In his own words, his greatest achievement to this day is the project founded by him to rehabilitate disabled patients and set them on the path to regaining lost or damaged dexterity skills through the sleight-of-hand magic. Project Magic as it is called is used in over 1100 hospitals and has been accredited by the American Occupational Therapy Association. Mystical, enigmatic, witty and highly entertaining Copperfield is passionate about this ancient art form and has always tried to preserve it whenever possible. He has the largest collection of magic and conjuring artifacts, historic memorabilia that is seen in one place. It is known as the International Museum and Library of Conjuring Arts and houses impressive collections all adding up to 80,000 items and 15,000 books on the subject dating from centuries ago to the present day. David Copperfield performs to sold-out venues about 500 times each year. He is a true performer who is passionate about all forms of magic and the ancient art of conjuring and touches our lives with mystery. Hopefully, he will be able to delight and enrapture us for a long time to come.
